After nearly a month of awful withdrawal symptoms, I’m throwing in the towel on being antidepressant free. A look at Wikipedia’s SSRI Withdrawal Syndrome page is a laundry list of the past few weeks of my life:
"SSRI discontinuation symptoms... may emerge when an SSRI is abruptly discontinued, when doses are missed, and less frequently, during dosage reduction. In addition, the symptoms are not attributable to any other cause and can be reversed when the original agent is reinstituted, or one that is pharmacologically similar is substituted. SSRI discontinuation symptoms, in most cases, may be minimized by slowly tapering antidepressant therapy, but there have been several case reports where symptoms occurred consistently even through repeated attempts to taper therapy. Physical symptoms include problems with balance, gastrointestinal and flu-like symptoms, and sensory and sleep disturbances. Psychological symptoms include anxiety and/or agitation, crying spells, irritability and aggressiveness."
And even more disturbing:
Symptoms described as "brain zaps", "brain shocks", "brain shivers", "brain pulse-waves", "head shocks", "pulses", "flickers", or "cranial zings" are withdrawal symptoms experienced during discontinuation (or reduction of dose) of antidepressant drugs.[3][4] These result from a global downregulation of serotonin receptors in response to increased levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, but the specific mechanism through which this creates symptoms is not understood.[citation needed] Common responses to dose reduction or cessation include dizziness, electric shock-like sensations, sweating, nausea, insomnia, tremor, confusion, nightmares, and vertigo.[3][4] The MedDRA "preferred term" for coding these types of symptoms in adverse drug reaction reports (for use in pharmacovigilance databases such as under the Yellow Card Scheme) is paraesthesia.[5][6]
I could take the “brain shivers,” the vertigo, nausea, and loss of fine motor control. I literally rolled with the punches when my sense of balance short-circuited and from a stand-still I found myself tilting over to meet the floor. I could even take the urges to cry at the drop of a hat (watching the Academy Awards was interesting. I have no vested interest whatsoever in the Academy, and saw a total of maybe two of the films that were up for awards this year. And yet, every single act of badly-performed sincerity had me reaching for the Kleenex box).
But the plummet in my self-esteem, the anxiety, the panic attacks that did their best to sneak up and knock me down out of the blue multiple times a day, the seething roiling pit in my stomach that would not go away for three weeks straight—I’ve navigated this cliff’s edge before, and had no desire to once again pretend that everything was fine as I secretly slid further and further down that mud-slicked slope into darkness.
I’ve been on antidepressants (name one, and I’ve probably tried it) since I was a sophomore in high school. Fifteen years. Half of my life. I’d be the first to admit that without their assistance in leveling out my chemical imbalances, I probably wouldn’t be here today. Most certainly not in the positive situations and conditions I find myself in today. In exploring the past with Omma, discovering her own history of anxiety disorder and depression was a revelation. This perpetual han—like my smile, my sense of humor, or a predisposition to heart disease—is an inheritance. And I honor this inheritance by acknowledging it, by addressing it with the necessary psychological and medical help.
And yet, in today’s hegemonic society, the shame and stigma persists. In tenth grade (coincidentally, the same year I started taking Paxil), I sat in the front row in class as my high school psychology teacher lamented that his friend who couldn’t deal with his depression on his own now had to take antidepressants. “It’s such a shame,” I remember him saying with a shake of his head. “He’s going to be dependent on these drugs every day for the rest of his life.” To this day, I regret not raising my hand and asking him whether he would see it as a similar weakness of character if his friend had had to rely on a daily pill to manage his high blood pressure.
Did I subconsciously take my psych teacher’s prejudices against mental health? I admit, my formative high school years were spent trying to live up to anyone and everyone’s opinions on the construction of the ideal subject. But more of it has to do with convenience in my day-to-day life. Not being on antidepressants meant not having to deal with their side effects (lethargy, problems sleeping, my reaction to caffeine, etc.), not having to refill my prescription at the pharmacy every month, not having to schedule a check-in appointment with the student health services psychiatrist (who creeps me out just a little) every three months, and paying the medical services copays.
But these are small prices to pay for mental and emotional well being. So I see my return to SSRIs as not a failure, not as a character flaw, but as a reaffirmation of my right to wellness. A small victory in self-regulation, of recognizing my need for help, catching myself before things snowballed out of control. This is me taking control, exercising agency, and believing I deserve to be happy, and don’t have to struggle on my own.

A week away from entering my third decade of life, I’ve been rather introspective as of late. My twenties are nearly behind me. In my youth, I watched the Gen-Xers with admiration and envy. They made the twenties seem so cool--young and carefree, but adult enough to engage in meaningful relationships, conversations, and careers. I couldn’t wait to grow out of my awkward teens, to live in a studio apartment, to go to my well-paid and fulfilling job, to sip cappuccinos while gazing out the window at a dynamic city skyline, and to go to wine and cheese tasting parties with my witty and insightful friends.
And while I maybe haven’t ended up where I imagined when I was a teenager, who actually does? To be honest, the reality I’m living now is far more than I ever imagined. And to be even more honest, in my imaginings, I didn’t ever picture myself living this long. Living with depression from before an age of language, I couldn’t imagine bearing the heaviness of living past my mid-twenties. I was content to hope for a couple good years of that independent and carefree lifestyle I coveted before I succumbed to darkness.
The past ten years have certainly been an epic journey for me. I’ve gone from taking care of ponies and teaching little girls to ride back to the world of academia where my eyes are opened to fascinating perspectives of the world daily. I’ve moved from the familiar but constricting community of my childhood in rural Michigan across the continent to one of the most diverse cities in the world. San Francisco feels more like a place of belongingness and home than the hometown of my youth ever did.
My twenties were host to a period of the darkest despair I have ever known. In my twenties, I lost loved ones, I’ve bid reluctant goodbyes, I lost my grasp on the moorings that grounded my sense of self. I had my heart broken. I lost the will to live, I tried to end my life. More than once. In a desperate attempt to realign the synapses of my psyche to something that wasn’t shot through with gaping holes of howling emptiness, I underwent electroshock therapies that instead of granting me the peace I yearned for ultimately wiped out huge chunks of my memory and has rendered my short-term memory spotty and unreliable at best.
Yet I’m still here, stronger than ever, having managed to scrabble inch by inch from the depths of hell. And hard work shall be rewarded, no?
My twenties have also been witness to the greatest sense of inner peace and self-acceptance that I have ever known. I’ve found purpose and passion. I’ve found true love; I’ve married my best friend, vowed in front of those I love to spend the rest of my life with this good man who has seen me through my darkness, who held aloft a torch of light and love and walked with me step by step to the breaking dawn of a seemingly endless night. I’ve found community and camaraderie in the brilliant scholars I’ve had the privilege to work alongside in my pursuit of graduate studies and community organization. I’ve spent hours, days, weeks, and months in the land of my birth, rediscovering my heritage, making it my own, and making it feel like home.
My twenties saw my family grow in all directions. I’ve gained mothers, sisters, brothers, aunts, and cousins, and I feel the blessings of their love shower down on me every day. The growth and forging of these new relationships continues to be a source of wonder and gratitude.
With so much that has happened in the past ten years, I am somewhat at at loss as to where to go from here. My plans for the future never ventured this far. And while I may have never daydreamed about my thirties as I did my twenties, there are things I do look forward to.
In this next decade, I will earn my doctorate from one of the best universities in the world.
I will publish my book.
I will become a mother.
I will welcome even more people into my family and will open my heart even more to give and receive love.
At thirty, I may not have caught that elusive perpetual bliss just yet, but I certainly know I’m pointed in the right direction.
